Your First Port of Call for Sailing Yacht Insurance

Sailing yacht insurance has more to deal with than a hull on a mooring, from the mast, sails and rigging to the races you enter. It must also fit the waters you plan to cruise. At Stoneways Marine, we’ve arranged sailing yacht insurance from Poole since the early 1980s and still race and cruise on the South Coast ourselves. Speak to our team and tell us how you sail and we’ll put together a quote specifically for your needs.

What Our Sailing Yacht Insurance Covers

Our sailing yacht insurance is a wide all-risks policy with minimal exclusions. It covers physical damage to the hull, sails, onboard gear and machinery, as well as third-party liability if you injure someone or damage their property while you’re sailing.

You can extend the policy to include racing, a wider cruising area and personal accident cover. This means you only pay for the extensions relevant to how you use the boat. Every sailing yacht insurance policy has its own limits and exclusions, so if you’re unsure about anything in your documents, get in touch with our team, and we’ll go through it with you.

If something does go wrong, our claims guidance sets out what to do first, and we’ll handle the claim with you from there.

Insurance for Yachts That Race

A standard cruising policy may limit what it pays for while you’re racing, so tell us if you plan to race your yacht. We can add a racing extension to your sailing yacht insurance, so you’re protected while competing. This can include damage to sails, spars and rigging.

Members of our team race along the South Coast during the season. We sponsor the VPRS rating class, which we’ve helped grow, including the Stoneways VPRS National Championships, and we support Poole Regatta. If you’re running a campaign with a paid crew or a team behind it, our race team insurance is built for that instead.

How Your Sailing Experience Affects Your Quote

We insure sailors at every level of experience, but insurers do take qualifications into account. The RYA pathway from Day Skipper to Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster shows an insurer how much training you’ve had. Be sure to tell us what you hold because it can help your quote.

If you’re still working your way up, our article on building up your sailing experience is a good place to start for some information.

Cover for Where You Sail

Where you keep and sail the yacht directly impacts your insurance policy. Cruising the Solent and sailing out to the Scilly Isles each carry different risks. We’ll set the cruising area to match your plans and extend it if you’re heading further afield.

Who Arranges Your Cover

Keith Lovett, our Managing Director and Senior Underwriter, looks after sailing yacht insurance, and you’ll deal with him and the team in Poole directly. We provide quotes for comparison and build policies for more complex needs. We also handle your claims and organise your renewals.

frequently asked questions

Sailing yacht insurance premiums in the UK typically start from upwards of £250. We can’t give you a set price without knowing about you and your yacht, though.

The make, size, age and value of the yacht all affect the premium, along with whether you race or cruise and where you sail. Your experience, where the yacht is kept, and your claims history count too. For an exact quote, call us on 03333 609 886.

Not automatically, because racing usually needs to be added to your policy as an extension. Tell us which events or series you plan to enter, and we’ll make sure the cover reflects them.

Yes, but it depends on the yacht. We’ll need the full details of the vessel before we decide, so get in touch and we can talk it through.
